Frequently asked questions
From choosing your color to caring for it at home, here’s a little guidance to help you feel comfortable and confident.
Let’s talk hairChoosing a service
What’s the difference between highlights, balayage, and all-over color?
Highlights lighten selected strands to add brightness and dimension. Balayage is a hand-painted technique that creates a softer, blended look. All-over color changes or refreshes your overall shade. The best choice depends on the look you want and how much upkeep fits your routine.
How do I know which color service to book?
If you’re unsure, reach out before booking. Tell me what your hair looks like now and what you’d like to change. A photo of your current hair and a few inspiration pictures can help us choose the right starting point.
Can you help me choose a haircut that suits my hair and daily routine?
Absolutely. We’ll talk about your hair’s texture, how you usually style it, and how much time you want to spend on it. A good haircut should work for your everyday life as well as look good when you leave the salon.
What should I book if I want to cover or blend gray hair?
That depends on whether you want fuller coverage or a softer blend as your hair grows. Your natural color, the amount of gray, and your preferred maintenance schedule all help guide the choice. If you’re unsure, contact me before choosing a service.
Before your appointment
Should I wash my hair before a color appointment?
Come with your hair reasonably clean and free of heavy product buildup. There’s no need to arrive with very dirty hair. If your service needs special preparation, we can discuss that beforehand.
Should I bring inspiration photos?
Yes, please do. Pictures help show the color, length, or shape you have in mind. Tell me what you like about each photo, and we’ll talk about what’s achievable with your hair.
What should I tell you about previous color or at-home treatments?
Let me know about salon color, box dye, bleach, henna, perms, straightening, or smoothing treatments, even if they were a while ago. Hair history helps me choose an approach and avoid unwanted surprises. No judgment, just useful information.
How long should I allow for my appointment?
Timing depends on the service, your hair’s length and thickness, and the change we’re making. Bigger color changes usually need more time. If you have somewhere to be afterward, let me know before booking so we can plan realistically.
Keeping your hair healthy
How often should I get a trim?
It depends on your haircut, your hair’s condition, and whether you’re growing it out. Short or precise styles often need more frequent shaping, while longer styles may go longer between trims. We can work out a schedule that suits your goals.
How can I keep my color from fading?
Use shampoo and conditioner intended for color-treated hair, avoid very hot water, and keep styling-tool temperatures moderate. Sun exposure and swimming can also affect color. Your shade and routine will help determine the best care between visits.
How often should I wash color-treated hair?
Wash as often as your scalp and lifestyle need. You don’t have to follow a rigid schedule or put up with an uncomfortable scalp to protect your color. Gentle products and lukewarm water are good places to start.
How can I reduce heat damage and breakage?
Use a heat protectant, choose the lowest effective temperature, and limit repeated passes over the same section. Be gentle when detangling, and avoid pulling hair tightly every day. If you’re seeing breakage, we can talk through your styling routine.
What can help dry or frizzy hair?
The right conditioner, gentler handling, and less heat can help. A leave-in product may also make hair easier to manage. Frizz doesn’t always mean damage, especially with naturally wavy or curly hair, so care should suit your texture.
Planning a color change
Can I go lighter in one appointment?
Sometimes, but it depends on your starting color, previous treatments, and your hair’s condition. Going much lighter may take several appointments. We’ll discuss what’s realistic before getting started, with your hair’s condition guiding the plan.
Can you correct at-home hair color?
Reach out before booking so we can discuss what you used, when you used it, and the result you want. Some changes are straightforward, while others need a gradual approach. A strand test may be needed before deciding how to proceed.
How often will I need a root touch-up?
Many clients refresh their roots around every four to six weeks, but there’s no single schedule for everyone. Hair growth, the contrast with your natural shade, and how much regrowth you’re comfortable with all play a part.
What’s a good color option if I want less upkeep?
Color that stays closer to your natural shade, with softer blending at the roots, often grows out more gently. Depending on your hair, subtle highlights, balayage, or gray blending may be options. We’ll talk about maintenance before choosing your look.
